David Hazeltine is one of the pianists who successfully forged his own
style. His major influences extend from Art Tatum to Bud Powell to the
great living masters such as Buddy Montgomery, Barry Harris and
Cedar Walton. David made his professional debut whenhe was thirteen in
Milwaukee and the States in Chicago and Minneapolis, where he had
the opportunity to play with great jazz musicians like Charles
McPherson, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, Pepper Adams and Chet Baker
who invited him to move to New York. After settling in New York in
1992, David immediately found himself in the music business, setting
up his own trio with Louis Hayes on drums and Peter Washington on
contrabbass: from that moment he was also very popular as a sideman,
working with Freddie Hubbard, James moody, Faddis- Hampton -Heat
Sextet, Carnegie Hall Big Band, Louis Hayes Quintet, Marlena Shaw
(of which he is also the arranger and music director pianist) etc.
In 1996 he recorded his first CD as a leader entitled Four Flights Up
(with Slide Hampton). Now he boasts more than fifty recordings both
as a leader and as a sideman.
